The Alaska Native Leadership Network (ANLN) sent
out a recruitment in April, 2000. Several people
applied to participation in
the Leadership Network and ten were selected.
Four participants fly in from rural Alaska for the
training sessions and six others live in the
Anchorage area. All ten of them have ties to their
village communities and are affiliated to both
their Village Corporation and Regional Corporation.
Almost all of the participants are either employed
by or serve as board members to either a Village or
Regional ANCSA Corporation.
The first ANLN training session was held June
22-24, 2000 in Girdwood, Alaska. The training
sessions were kick-off with the group going white
water rafting as a team building exercise. The next
two days were spend in an executive
style training session were the group participated
in several team building exercises, and several
discussions on leadership and their future roles as
Native Leaders. During the last day, the group
learned a format for "group coach", where they can
bring individual issues to the group and receive
feedback on how to tackle their issue.
During the two-days in training, we also invite an
Alaskan Leader who can speak to the group about
their experiences and what they feel the group will
need to overcome to reach their goals.
The second session is already planned to take place
July 21-22, 2000 in Wasilla, Alaska.
